Assignment 3 — The Story

For your last assignment, you are challenged to create a body of work that tells a story with a minimum of six photographs. This story need not be chronological meaning- have a beginning, middle or end.

  • These pictures must be thematically linked.
  • At least 200 images must be photographed. Photograph more than you need so that you have a great pool of imagery from which you can edit.
  • You will be required to submit your contact sheets- we will choose images together

Sample stories/themes:  American consumerism, an abandoned house, a perfect romance gone awry, the effects of over eating, the ‘mallification’ of NYC/the death of the small business owner, longing, things people take for granted, urban nature

  • Don’t tell a story that is not worth telling. For example, I do not want to see pictures of someone getting up in the morning, brushing their teeth, getting on the bus, going to school, coming home, going to sleep. That is incredibly boring!

Start by thinking about what is important to you, what you know.

PURPOSE:

1. Discover how to use several images to convey an idea or story that one image could not communicate.

2. Explore a subject in a detailed manner using both wide and close-up shots to better communicate.
3. Learn how to edit many images into a concise series that communicates a single idea or event.

Product: A minimum of 200 exposures, un-cropped, un-altered shot in CR2 format. Six of these images will be chosen to be perfected in photoshop and printed for class critique

First Round of shooting due May 31st

Second Round of shooting due June 7th

Final Edits, printed out for critique due June 14th.
